And yes, I am hungry, that's why I'm cooking up some chicken alfredo in a parmesan cream sauce with a bit of spinach right now.

Watch out for those Freezer power outages I have not been able to hunt elk or deer for several years now...No one to go with and I won't do it alone. Last time I got some elk from a former brother-in-law (now divorced and won’t speak to me due to association with his ex... Anyway, last hunt I went with him for the camping only and help out if he got one, which he did, so he shared a little bit with me. Steaks, roasts, and some exceptional summer sausage with jalapeño and cheese in it. Went away for a vacation 3-4 days and upon returning found power off on freezer, and had to throw all of it out. That was a real bummer!

I don't have to worry about freezer burn, for some reason I hold by the "share rule" I love the hunt and making the food, but I give most of it away. That is ok with me as long as none of it goes to waste. I hate when people waste the kill.

I too subscribe to both rules. The first ensures rations of elk meat should you, like the rest of the world, go prolonged periods of not being drawn.

I helped my dad get his first bull elk this weekend and spent all weekend butchering into steaks roasts stew meat and burgers. Hunting is a family affair for us so it gets spread around and never goes to waste! I had my bull elk in the freezer and had roasts for a year that came out delicioius. Best way to prepare is put on a rack over a glass pan or pie plate if smaller and let it drip out the blood in the fridge (wrap the whole thing, meat and pan in saran wrap) for about 3-4 days and it's the nice rich elk flavor but no "game" aftertaste for those that are sensitive to it. I got mine a few years ago with my bow and it was awesome to get to go with my dad!
