A whole new level of addiction.....

So recently I got to try out a 2 hander for a day. One of our guide customers had a basically unused 12'6" Sage Z-Axis 5 wt that he wanted me to try out. So I went out in the morning before work and after work and put myself through a crash course in spey casting (after doing a bit of research online). Sure enough I picked it up pretty quick and was doing double and single spey casts pretty well by the afternoon (a couple of the casts came out quite beautifully too). Even tried a snake roll but I'm not one of the rare naturals with that cast I found (although I feel how it's supposed to be done). Still can't shoot a whole lot of line like the real pros with spey can, but I was easily casting the long bellied shooting head on it. Sure is fun though once you figure out the amount of power and the timing to use on the casts and I even managed to catch a few swinging a bugger, nothing big but satisfying none the less. Now I have to find a way to get money for a good spey setup to continue delving deeper into the addiction

Look at the GP 15 rod. Bottom one on the chart. That is a 15' two handed spey rod 10/11. Comes in a covered rod case. $80 plus shipping. You aren't going to find a spey rod already built for that price. Components cost more than $80. Don't know when this closeout will be over.

I know it may be way over rodded for AZ....but for $80 bet you could learn spey casting techniques with it....and even catch a fish.

Just to let you know where there is a smokin' deal on a two handed rod.

Good Luck

Yep. I have a friend who is an excellent spey caster and has been teaching me single spey. Being able to do a snake roll cast in a small creek with a three weight is a blast . Nothing like being able to make a 40' cast with trees all around you with such precision.

That's what we were doing out there? I thought it was just an excuse to drink in the park...

Hey Rush...the real advantage to a spey rod is that you can cover more water with repetative casts or cover more water faster than you can with a single handed rod when swinging a fly. There is not enough water in AZ to fully utilize the benefits of a spey rod like in the PNW or BC but the techniques can be adapted to a single handed rod and a 9'6" or 10' 5-6 wt will perform very well. The fish are NOT always on the other side of the river so start out at ankle depth. A 10/11 wt spey rod is big even for the Skeena and Thompson where the fish travel the edges. Learn the single spey, double spey, and snap-T into a single spey and you will do just fine.
