That's a older guide book. I was scratching my head to when I read that part
but I don't know much on tippet size 5x and 4x in my tackle mostly. The pattern info is still on point

Maybe for casting bigger patterns? 6x is a better turn over?

I have some cone head buggers that are heavy metal and cast like a hunk of titanium

Also, mending and drifting on moving water with different effects or fish bigger than a foot and a half.

Looks like he only recommends 6x on (oak creek, EP, Lee valley, ''Rim country'' which includes Tonto, CC, WCL, WSL, also Sunrise and North Fork of White,)
Most everything else is 5x or 4x....

The only pattern I see is fast moving clear water and places with big browns or bigger wary fish..IDK

Is Glenn Tinnin still active in AZ or a AZFAT member?
*nevermind looks like he lives in CO. now and the book is from 2004

6x is smaller in diameter than 5 & 4x so it would not help in turning over big flies. Infact it would do worse. 6x is is geared more towards tiny flies and spooky fish as its harder to see due to its thinner diameter. Like at the San Juan.

5x is usually all you need for the rim unless your throwing a big streamer in the hopes of a nice brown. In that case 3x is more likely what ya need.

I understand ops. That makes more sense then for where he recomends 6x.

on the spooky, clear, delicate trout lakes and streams.
