OK, I found some purple grizzly somebody sent me for the PL. Thing is, this is dry fly quality hackle, and about a size 14. Are these supposed to be dry flies, or streamer type, with a webbier hackle? I tied one weighted and one unweighted, but if I tie up a bunch without trying them, I might be disappointed.

The PL

It's my understanding that you can fish the PL both dry or wet.

Wet model should have some wire for weight around the body.

Looks like the old renegade and they can be fished dry and wet.

I want to work up some and have some ideas for modification of the body with some small purple wraps and peacock along with a purple tail.

Still looking for some purple sadle.

Good luck and post some pictures if you can.

I tied up some renegades with weight last summer, but never got a chance to try them. Did real well with tiny black fore and aft flies at the San Juan last fall. Must be midge clusters.

Can't do fly pictures - just can't get the hang of it.

The purple hackle came from somewhere up in the ShowLow, Pinetop area. Maybe Gray Wolf knows.

Renegade

If you tie the renegade back and front hackle with grizz, it's called a Bears Paw. Old fly.

There's a double renegade also.

Lots of variation just off the renegade and the PL is close.

ain't nothing but a regional knockoff of a regional knockoff of the renegade. renegade is one of the all time great fly patterns imnsho.

sheesh I'd sure like some purple dry fly hackle. yes I would.

I put red tags on my renegades. Cutts can't resist them.
