smash yer doggone barbs newby. you should do that before any hook goes into the vise. stick yerself in the hand or worse yet me or any other poor soul yer fishing w/ in the cheek. voice of experience speaking. I've stuck my wife in the cheek. fortunately barb was smashed and it came out effortlessly w/ nary a drop of blood nor tear shed. ******** she wasn't even pissed. though I've always maintained she shouldn't have been standing there and should have known better as well. she didn't like hearing it but I was right. wasn't her first rodeo and all.

I have been working out the procedure to tie a v. cool caddis emerger that I know will kill. still need to refine things so it goes together smoothly. likewise for a soft hackled mayfly emerger. I'd love to claim the designs, but I came across them in an article in the late fishing mag, fish and fly, that somehow survived my massive magazine purge/dump to the recycling bin.

Yeah. Normally I smash them on the creek, as 95% of the time I go barbless. Though smashing them at the vise would be a useful habit to get into.

Newby,

What's the link/contact info for casting for recovery? If I can come up with a batch of consistent and quality flies I'd like to get some their way. I'm probably tying more than I need just to get better at tying. Might as well put em to good use/a good cause. The hoppers look good.

I'm sending them to a guy from another forum who is getting a bunch together to do a bulk donation. But here is the link:

Another very good organization that you can donate flies to is Project Healing Waters. Similar idea but it is for wounded veterans.

that link also lists suggested patterns, though they'll surely appreciate anything they get and let you know it as well. I do buggers cuz I can crank them out like nobody's bidness and it's no bother for me to do so. I've also sent midges and plenty of others. alpinefly and myself (among others too I'm sure) ask everyone to tie an extra swap fly and include the swap set(s). least a tyer w/ a conscience can do. especially if it's been a part of their life. and unfortunately, we're all in that boat one way or another.

Maybe for the swap?

Pike fly, mine usually don't have the head like that but I was experimenting.

Gurgler

I thought this was a little slim for a shad but what do you think?

And who doesn't love a good hopper?

looks like yer getting it but why is that segmented hopper body sheathed again in foam?
a lotta pointless work there.

first fly looks great. heck all of them do. nice to see another kid who gets it. keep up the good work. gurgler looks like I tied it 'cept for the tail material and length. you can get away w/ the length w/ bucktail and flash. not marabou. that can foul to easily.

Thanks, and that hopper part is supposed to be a wingcase i guess; not my pattern. I just use it to keep up other flies.

Will do on the gurgler.
