Fishing the Florida Keys, Need Advice!

Hello everyone, this is my first post in awhile and needed to pick some peoples' brains. So thank you for any input!

My father is turning 75 this year and told me a bucket list item is to fish for Tarpon off the Florida Keys. I am targeting to head out this May/Early June and figured some of you have done this .
  • Do you know a good guide service?
  • We will be flyfishing, what gear should we bring that wouldn't be provided by a service?
  • Is there a better time to go, ie, Early May, Late May?
  • Any other "Sage" Advice?
Thank you very much!

I'm not an expert, but I've done it a couple times. Here is a little of what to expect. First of all, it is tough. The number one thing is start practicing casting right away. You need to be able to double haul long casts accurately in windy conditions. As for gear, the guide should provide the rods and flies, you mainly need to worry about clothing. Wear lightweight, quick drying, long sleeves, a hat, a buff and good polarized glasses. Rods will be heavy in the 10-12 wt range. Book as many days as you can because the weather is often too cloudy, windy, rainy, etc. The last time I did it we booked 6 days, had a couple with ideal conditions, and I landed 1 tarpon. I used Ryan at I think June is prime time, guides might already be booked. Hope this helps, have fun!

Circlehook x2.
I would add that you will be on a rather small boat, flats boat, and it is not too stable, so your Dad may appreciate a leaning post on the casting deck. Many of the guides have these but don’t put them on unless requested.

Try Capt. Andy Thompson, he's a great guide who I've fished with many times. He normally fishes Biscayne Bay which is at the top of the Keys with easy access to Miami. He trailers his boat as opposed to working out of a marina which means he will travel to the best and most productive area to launch his boat and fish his customers. If he is booked he'll refer you to some other good guides. Tell him I sent you.
