Reading that page makes me depressed in so many ways... [Confusion] aside, how can it not be obvious to them that there is a problem when the government fishery managers sound like cheap used appliance salesmen. "Come on down! Its the best time of the year, our last shipments just arrived! But hurry, they're going quick!" Because most of these waters will not be worth a damn till the next time we fill the aquarium... Arg, now I need a beer.
Oh yeah, swinging micro-buggers (though I've never quite gone to #20) on little mountain creeks is actually pretty sweet if you havn't tried it.

Somewhere on the website there's a post about guys fishing wooly buggers that small.. Maybe in 2007. Or tying them that small. I'm getting old I can't remember.

Fishermen know that this is a Wooly Bugger, but what do the fish perceive it to be ?
Being thin and barely 3/4" long it could pass for a Leech, Damsel, Stonefly, etc. If I tied another I would use a short shank, wide gap hook like a TMC 2488 #12. |

"What the world needs now..."
It seems to me some constructive criticism would be a whole lot more useful than most of these comments about a mistaken fly ID. There are some really good people working for G&F and too little credit expressed on this site. IMO
If you're really upset about something or someone in G&F, and it's important enough to you - man up and address that person, in person. Phone call, email, letter, etc. It's kinda cheap to post attacks on individuals on this forum. If there is an issue such as small stream management in the sate, then this forum is a great place for responsible dialogue and input. The debate over gila trout management certainly is an important issue for Az fly fishers. I think that name calling, and slanderous speculation over motives, etc. is over the line. Such rhetoric is NOT going to help win over those in G&F, who really are pretty important players in determining the quality of fly fishing we enjoy in Arizona. As to Todd- I thought it was pretty funny to see a reference to such a tiny wooly bugger, and when I first read the report had a good chuckle and thought to myself- that G&F guy has NO clue how hard it would be to tie a wooly bugger that small. Almost any fly tyer who reads the report would probably raise his eyebrows at the idea. Then I thought that either-- he mis-ID ed the fly, or got the hook size wrong,.... or... That really IS the fly that was working so well. Turns out it IS possible for a SKILLED tyer to tie a sz 18 wooly bugger, and it looks to me, like it could be a pretty effective fly. I'll have to try and tie one. Whatever, I was disappointed to see what started out as a funny thread, turn pretty ugly and sad. -my 2 cents-

Cheer up Phlash. You know you just feel bad for posting better reports than the G,Fn,D. Most of us are just giggling about this stuff. Go catch a bunch of delicious trout today and show us the photos. We live for your Mountain report.

I fish a fly very similar to the fly wildwilly tied up. They have a permanent home in my fly box.
