Learning to cast

I have a friend who wants to learn to fly fish. Where can they go to learn to cast? Does anyone hold casting clinics anymore? There used to be a lodge, I think it was close to Greer, that taught groups and had ponds available. Does anyone know how to reach them? Was this the one that burned down?

Arizona Flycasters club puts on regular casting classes and have certified instructors who advertise on the club newsletter. There are also some good DVDs on fly casting instruction -Lefty Kreh, Joan Wulff. Lots of people on this forum to meet who can help too. Hope this helps.

Orvis is taking registrations for their fly fishing 101 classes...there is some casting instruction. and it's free!

* Yeah the Orvis classes are free and good hands on learning.

Fly casting videos on you-tube have a plethora
of tips and tricks you can learn a lot from.
The internet is your ally and has a lot of tutorials.

Also, have them make a video of them casting,
to see what they need to work on and then later show a pro/non beginner the video,
for help on their casting mechanics.
It's like NFL QB's ''film''.

You get a birds eye view of the back-cast and the loops etc.

I got some help at Desert Sportsman a few years ago. I was looking at stuff, mentioned a problem I was having and Kyle took me out on the lawn with another customer and showed me a few tricks.
Ive heard good things about the orvis classes as well.

You could send him to guys that read more about fishing then they really do go fishing. The best casting guy in the state is skip Dixion at lees ferry anglers book him

Check with Bass Pro Shops......There White River Fly Shop in Mesa offers free classes. Call for schedule.

If Flygirl is still teaching casting on Saturdays at Basspro that'd be my first choice to send a beginner. She's quite patient and a good teacher. She's also a helluva caster, but that doesn't matter for a beginner in my opinion. The first steps should be a solid explanation of the very basics and mechanics of casting. Distance and tricky stuff can come later.
