I would say you are gripping the rod to tightly in your attempt to apply power into the wind like todd mentioned. The best thing would be to work on that, but in the meantime these are pretty sweet:

Thanks for the link to the Buff gloves. I've been using regular cotton gardening gloves with the finger tips cut off. These Buffs look great!

It might even be the handle. If its a factory 8wt I would assume they put either a half wells or full wells grip on it. If your used to casting with a Reversed half wells(aka Western), Cigar, or Ultra fine style grips you might be just holding it wrong. Or you just need more time figuring out how to hold them well. I noticed when I built my fiberglass 5wt with a full wells that my thumb would get sore. I think it was because it was being pushed up higher while casting since I normally fish with Ultra fine or Reversed half wells grips.

I already look like a geek on the water according to a few bass guys. With my snazzy neck buff, sun hat and billowing mesh panel shirts, all I need is a pair of spandex gloves to further alienate myself from the Nascar cap and tee shirt normals.

Just making fun of all the fancy fly fishing clothing and acknowledging that I'm also a sucker for it.
BTW, if fly fishing gives someone blisters, they may want to pick up a tube of vaginex. I think they sell it at most drug stores.

OOh, good one!! I just use my cut off cotton gloves in winter to keep my hands warm.
