Pike Bunny

Since my Pike exploits began, my time has been consumed sitting at the vise tying, and playing around with traditional patterns and changing them slightly to fit my needs. I have received a few pm's and emails asking for tips and patterns that have led to success. So I figured I would post this pattern for those who tie, and are looking to target pike on the fly. So give it a look and let me know what you think.

Nice! Ever have probs with them hitting short? Maybe a stinger hook?

You fish that with floating line? I see you fish almost always from shore.

So its really funny you ask about short strikes. I will try to break it down without going into pages worth of information:

My first trip hunting pike I had a big hit, and my fly came back missing 4 inches of a tail. So I came home that night from fishing and tied stinger hooks on all my flies. Man did they work! They worked too well. I hooked into a couple pike that I would have hooked on the main hook, but instead I was popping a gill with the stinger hook. Kc at that time was hooking all his fish without a stinger and it almost seemed like I didn't need them. The next 2 trips I went without stinger hooks on my flies and had no problems. Until last trip I had two fish short strike and both times my fly came up 4 inches shorter. It is a frustrating game these fish are playing with me, but I would rather miss a fish then pop a gill with stingers. So no longer do I tie in stingers.

As for the floating line, I always fish floating. The leaders I am using are Rio toothy critter, that have a 9 inch section of 45lb steel leader section tied to the end. This steel leader really acts like a sink tip, and when fishing shallow water you have to impose lighter flies and a faster strip. However in the deeper water the hook weight, material weight, and steel leader get the fly into the 4ft to 5ft depths, which seems to work really well for the deeper holes at ULM.

long as that tail is I'd worry about it fouling around the bend.
mighty small hook. lose about half that kf. less is more when it comes to flash materials. it doesn't take much.

Thanks for the tips. The hook is plenty big and highly effective! A lot of guys told me to to do size 2/0 and bigger but I have yet to see a need for it.

As for the tail fouling the bucktail really aids in keeping it from doing so. If I tie them without the bucktail I tie the zonker strip in and then wrap the thread around the zonker strip like a post and it really helps.

Thanks for the tips Mike!

you can tie in a loop of mono or wire to keep the tail riding high as well.
because it is so long I'd tie in a small stinger hook as well. myself I don't mind short strikes at all. means I'm doing something right.

What are your thoughts on using a circle hook as a trailer? I heard that circle hooks are meant for the fish to hook themselves basically, but it won't set till it hits the lip? Some have talked me out of it, but I was wondering if you had a take on it.
