First, review the responses to a recent post made by Mattj.

Second, read the responses for a second time.

Check ebay. Make sure your parents are willing to buy something with their card and you give them the cost in return. Keep an eye out for good deals on there. Be warned there are an equal number of people asking a ridiculous price for a cheap item as there are those who are selling things for a reasonable price.

Keep an eye out on sales at cabelas, sportsmans, etc......

Do research and make sure what you are buying is decent.

Or you could put that money in the savings account and save it for a nicer set up!

Or

You could buy 90$ worth of flies from an online warehouse and have more flies then you need and have no need to tie!

Or

You could be a kid and spend that money on candy and soda and go work off your sugar high at a park!

Or

You could take your junior high school crush out to a dinner and a movie!

Basically: you don't need to tie just fish!

I'd say go on eBay and find an older good vise to save money then figure out what two or three patterns you want to tie and buy just the materials for those. These tools are kind of the bare essentials:

Vise (A decent one will set you back $20 bucks - see below)
Good scissors (Anvil's $20 bucks)
Thread bobbin (get Terra's for $10 bucks)

You should be able to set yourself up pretty well with high quality stuff if you stick to just these things. If you find you like it, add things as money permits. A bodkin and other tools can mostly be made by yourself...or foraged. Forget a whip finish tool and learn to do it by hand. You'll thank yourself later on for doing so.

Better to have a few high quality things than a bunch of cheap stuff. Oh, don't skimp on the scissors, get some Anvil's or equivalent.

On the vise. This one is listed on eBay and just about every master fly tyer out there started with a Thompson. It's a great starter vise for much less money than a new lesser quality vise.

My two cents,
Grant
