Fishing Tonto Creek in March

If we can manage it the wife and I have a Groupon deal to stay at Kohl's Ranch Lodge this coming weekend (March 24-25) and I know that the stocking schedule for Tonto Creek and other places up on the RIM don't really start till 1st week in April. So I guess my question is if I am hunting for any holdovers in that creek what flies would be suggested?

I've had luck using bead-head nymphs, especially where there are deeper pools in the creek. But I've only ever fished the upper portion of the creek. Have heard that the creek is productive all the way down to Hellsgate, so you've got lots of water to fish.

And good luck! I am hoping to get into some of the Rim streams before the stocking begins, just to beat the crowds.

I've been fishing Tonto all winter. The fish are still there, just not in the numbers. Pulled a bunch of nice holdovers out of some pockets. Don't worry, I put them back for you! I fish north of the highway.

Fished the upper portions of Tonto & Canyon on Friday and there are a few holdovers willing to play; all taken on nymps. Had a few look at the EH caddis, but no takers. There were a few BWOs coming off on Canyon and a handful of caddis coming off on Tonto. It is scary to see how low and clear the water is in March. I am afraid for the Rim streams come late summer. Friday was probably my last trip to the Rim; as it is nearing suburban evacuation time I try to avoid. Time to head to the Rockies.

Before you head into the Rockies, take a moment in looking at some possibilities I just sent to you. Hopefully these may excite your senses...
