I meant to say an indicator on the fly like some white calf tail over the back

I understood that to be what you meant...

Personally, I never saw the need. You can generally sense where your fly is even if you cant see it. Just wait for that slash and set the hook...

My eyes are getting so bad that I personally probably couldnt see a tied on indicator anyways.

I definitely need a fly with an indicator or a white wing or post when fishing the midging trout at the Ferry this year. Sometimes the scum lines are thick with midges and often the fish are just suspended and popping their heads up and down rhythmically and when I lose the fly in the glare I have no idea if it is my fly or something near it being taken. Less true of a big fly like a Cicada imitation, but even then I was losing the black ones in the glare.

Thought I'd bump this as cicada season is right around the corner.

I am going to try and tie some of these up. I would post a pic of the finished product but this is not comedy central. I hope the fish are fooled.

Rusty,
Are you going for the pattern that is on You Tube with the chenille body? I found that one interesting too. I'll be camping with the fam and some friends this weekend so maybe I'll take some material with me and try to tie some up.
