People have been using HEET for a long time, but that stuff puts out some toxic fumes and it's kind of falling out of favor.

I made these and have tried many different models and fuels. I will have to find the article about the fuels but the first fuel I tried was denatured alcohol because I had some on hand. The article mentioned that you never know what you are going to get with denatured alcohol because there are no requirements that state a certain product has to be used to dilute the alcohol. The article was extreme saying what one might use. I've ended trying heet and isopropyl alcohol as well after a few burns with the denatured alcohol the stove was brown and dirty but I think it burned the hottest. I just ended up going with the heet since it seemed to be the easiest to find. I had a scout troop build these and use them on the back pack trips and they work great. I've boiled water in less then three minutes.

I built one today and it worked great ...not sure I will use it instead of my MSR but it gave me an excuse to have a beer this afternoon!

HEET is gas line anti freeze. Get the gas line stuff for less at an auto store. I just use isopropyl alcohol myself.

Cooked a couple meatballs on the stove today... worked great; I adjusted the side dents and that made it burn much more evenly.

I built one last night and it boils a pot of water in about 6.5 minutes. Great little stove! Only negative I can see is its very sensitive to any type of wind and it seems that when a pot is on it a slight breeze could blow it out.

Wonder how it would work if you built a shield? Like a double wide can that the pot would actually sit on? Like something a bit of a wider diameter? or maybe the shield from a MSR stove too. |
