When starting a thread you can choose to add words to this area that describe the content of the thread. I believe when you use the search function the algorithm used to search and bring up topics includes the tags (I could be wrong on this last one)

Sorry for hijacking you thread with reality, but carp is a delicacy in some Asian countries. In Harrison R Steeves III book, Tying with Foam Fur and Feathers, he tells an anecdote involving keeping some small carp and a friend inviting him over to eat it. There are even two recipes included.
