At the bottom of a thread beneath the "Reply" button you will see a labeled area that says "tags." When starting a thread you can choose to add words to this area that describe the content of the thread. I believe when you use the search function the algorithm used to search and bring up topics includes the tags (I could be wrong on this last one)
