Which Fly Line

I just ordered a 9' 2 wt MHX kit from Mud Hole - this will be my first attempt at putting a rod together. The commercial rods I currently own were easy to get line for since I just ordered the appropriate weight line to match the rod. Up to this point they all matched just fine. But from what I know about ultralights it can get a little more complicated. If I knew the ERN (Common Cents System) actual rod weight I could just go by that but I'm worried a regular 2 wt line might be too light. I've read the longer ultralights tend to be on the heavier side so I might just get 3 wt line for it and hope for the best. Anyone have any suggestions or build an ultralight and face a similar situation? If so I'm all ears.

Knowing how the MHX blanks run, you will most likely have better luck by going with the 3wt line on it

Gotcha - thanks. I was thinking the same thing. I read on one of the forums about MH's 2 wt's over the years being about ERN 3.6 or so. I haven't even built this one yet and I'm already planning to order a TFO Finesse in 1 wt. That rod is 6'9" so I'm guessing the ERN would be closer to what a 1 wt should be. I can see where rod building can be just as fun as fly tying and fishing.
