No freaking clue...

Heading to chase steelhead near the Olympic Pennisula next week. I’ve caught them on conventional tackle before but never a fly rod. Didn’t want to invest in materials so tied up some stuff with all I have. Have two days on the water. Might fish this fly all day long just to land a steelhead on a fly I tied.

Don’t mock it. Any chance a winter run steelhead eats this? LOL

Haha...thanks for being kind I am fishing with a guide I have fished with before and a buddy from work. The guide is more a conventional tackle guy. Sounds like I should stick wiht eggs. I feel like a newby all over again...no clue what I am doing. Maybe it is the "fish of a 1,000 casts" moniker that has me nervous.

Its not easy. Just when I think I have fly fishin figured out I try fishing for another species of fish like steelhead or bonefish and its like I'm starting all over again. I went steelhead fishin for the first time this year. I felt confident but when I had to roll cast 20-30' I couldn't do it so no fish for me. Bone fishing on a boat fishing reefs and flats. Bonefish 1 o'clock 3,o'clock 5 o'clock he's gone. It is so fast its crazy but I was able to land one bonefish, but that was it. Its was a little stupid fish. I guess what I'm trying is your not the only one who feels like a newby all over again. I would say that we have all probably felt like you many times. I know I do. Good luck and keep trying new stuff. It can only make you a better angler.

Thanks, Seldom. I’ll whip a few of those up. Only have orange chenille so it will be an orange butt skunk.

If this was September/ October yes.

Or if for whatever reason the rivers are really low and clear.

Pink is a great winter color. Tie some in black/blue and you’re basically covered.

If you want to catch a steelhead. Yes beads are the way. But honestly, the fish deserve more respect than that, and there is nothing greater than a winter run wild steelhead on a swung fly.

Come prepared with sink tips, t-8, t-11 t-14 should cover you for a variety of water levels.

If it’s low and clear.. fish heavy tips in deep pockets, if it’s running high and “steelhead green” go lighter and swing allll the way to the bank.

Let us know how it goes!
