Time to hit the Rim lakes...

https://www.paysonroundup.com/news/f...d6a96f84f.html

The link above was published in today's Payson Roundup edition. I agree with the author that this is one of the premier times to hit the Rim lakes. One can almost have the entire lake to themselves, without raucous noise from the bank or elsewhere.

Peaceful comes to mind, other than watching the birds fight over fishing rights...

This time of year one almost has any of the Rim lakes to themselves. No more dodging ignorant watercraft users as they cruise by on kayaks or boats between you and the shore. Or simply getting too close to your backcasts.

Attention has turned from fishing to the fall/winter hunts. Campers aren't too keen on sleeping in the 20 degree temps overnight, let alone day temps in the 40's / 50's.

The latest I've ever been on the Rim lakes during a normal winter weather pattern, is Dec 18, on Willow Springs. Woods Canyon had long since closed their gates leaving a healthy walk to the water with a pontoon strapped to my back.

On that day (Dec 18), only the main body of the lake was ice free and even though I was pushing thin shelf ice out of the way, I had a stellar day in catching nice sized rainbow's. After 6+ hours in my pontoon (the old round style, leaving me sitting in the water basically from my waist down), the cold water finally told me my body was cold and I had to get out. I had the heater roaring on high the full 40 minute drive back to the house in Payson.

Yeppers, this is the time to hit up the Rim lakes, no doubt...

Most of the campgrounds have shut down, leaving primitive camping available some distance from the lakes.

As stated in another response, most of those showing up on the Rim are hunting with not much interest in fishing. Too bad, it's some of the better times of the year to catch trout. Especially with the Tiger's heading in close to shore for some easy hunting.

For the next couple of days, winds will be fairly gusty along the Rim as this cold front pushes its way through the State.
