Thumbs up Gila Trout in Arizona- Game on!

All right fellas skip the rodeo, race and golf tournament this weekend, get your gear together and head to Frye Mesa Reservoir. Thanks to a huge coopertive effort, we stocked some real beauties in there yesterday. Here is the potential state record catch and release so far:

And there are plenty bigger than this guy up there. You may want to review the process and rules for the IFGA world record fish.....
Besides the lunkers that went into the lake, we also helicoptered and backpacked another 650 Gilas into the creek as part of the recovery population. (Remember, no fishing in the creek yet).

Get out there, catch a memory, and take plenty of pics to share!

I might have to make a trip up there in the coming weeks. I am sure research has been done, but how do you think trout will fair in that lake in the summer?

Trout live up there all year; it is at ~5000 feet, fed by a cold stream and is very deep.
The reservoir is located just outside of Thatcher (near Safford), on the north slope of the Pinaleño Mountains (Mt. Graham). From Hwy 70 turn south on Reay lane drive a little over 2 miles and take the dirt road immediately before the junkyard. It is a rough dirt and rock road to get up- it takes about an hour to drive the 7.7 miles and you'll need a vehicle with good clearance, but there is no where else in state you can fish for Gilas.
It has been stocked with browns and rainbows in the past.

This was done by a large cooperative effort between Arizona Game and Fish, US Fish and Wildlife Service (especially Jeremy V on here), US Forest Service and some dedicated fly anglers from Old Pueblo Trout Unlimited and San Pedro Flycasters- thanks guys for all the help and hard work!

It is on my list (top) of places to go and fish to target. Big round of applause for all the effort and dedication that went into this phase of the recovery plan...you guys are great.
