My uncle, dads brother.
Started me out with my first rod - 7.5' 6wt Berkely fiberglass, Kmart Medalist knock-off reel, and vest. I still have all of them and my 11yd old son now uses the vest - the rod and reel are retired. Just realized he started me out 40 years ago - dang I'm old. ![]()

My Mom's Dad let me ride his full campy Allegro race bike with silk sew ups as soon as I could get my leg over it. That's like giving a 10 year old a Ferrari. Hs name was Dr. Jack MacArthur. Hi Jack!

My brother taught me but I have had many mentors over the years, I learned much from Alex funk, Bob Derosier, Larry Allen (casting), Kevin Kria, Bobby Dobbins, Tim Oliver, John Rhomer, Steve Berry, Mike McLaughin, Ted Bounds, and many more. If I forgot you my apologies.
I have had my hand instructing a few as well.

Tough question for me. I started out self taught. I learned from an Orvis book and the internet, and learned a lot on this forum.
I then had the fortune to get some first hand instruction from the master, Gary Hitterman. Was taught a lot by several people, like Chad, Emerson, Kirk. Later on I continued learning from people like Jason, and many others. There are too many to name. If I chose self-taught it would be half wrong, I would still be casting terribly, not tying flies, and know a lot less if it was not for so many people. All of them strangers prior to my fly fishing introduction.

Gary knows his stuff. Mike (WMF) showed me some things on CC that has really helped me with small stream fishing.

The best teacher is owning a vice and tying a lot, being on water everyweekend, learning the depths and structure of all the lake you fish for. And most of all casting till you arm falls off....this is my teacher, my zen....When you fish SO MUCH you often fish alone....
