New in town

New to the forum, and new to the State of Arizona. I will be moving down to safford to go to school at eastern Arizona for a year and i just would like to know where are some good places to fish for trout as well as bass and maybe some pike and musky. I have experience fishing for all of these species as wel as all the equipment to do so, i am just trying to determine what to bring down with me. I have a 6 wt rod that ive caught musky, and bass on and i have a 4 wt that i love fishing streams with. I just don't know if i should bring them both or which one i should leave. Also, i am not planning on bringing waders, should i reconsider? I will be making some trips to Phoenix as well as Tucson so i will have to keep that in mind as well.

Welcome! Leave your waders, no need for them unless you plan on fishing Lees Ferry. Pike are gonna be quite a ways away from Safford as you will need to be up in the Flagstaff area. Upper Lake Mary/Ashurst. No Muskies in AZ that I'm aware of. Your best trout options will be the Mogollon Rim near Payson and in the White Mountains on the east side of the state. I would say bring both the 6 & 4. Try to make some time for exploring the state!

There are two, well three well written books on fly fishing in AZ.
They have all the info you need to get you started with detail chapters and maps.
You will find them extremely useful and then use the search feature on the forum here.

1. Flyfisher's Guide to Arizona by Will Jordan (my fav be sure to get 2nd edition)
2. Arizona Trout Streams and Their Hatches: (also excellent)
3. Fly Fishing Arizona by Glenn Tinnin (1999) Where to fish in AZ (paper back & older)

This information really should be a sticky thread for all new members, would answer a lot of questions, welcome to AZFAT

Quemado Lake in New Mexico has muskies. It is that far from you in Safford. Welcome to AZ. You will learn fishing comes with a gas bill for your truck....
