Durango

My wife and I (both new to fly fishing having only fished with guides so far) are headed to Durango next month for a week.

We are going to get a guide for one day - probably on the San Juan. I have searched old posts here and need some opinions.

First - guide services.

San Juan Angler (used to be Caddis?)
Fishheads
Aztec Anglers
Or someone else? Two of those are "Orvis Certified"

Second - float trip or wade trip?

I have spin casted in rivers for salmon in Alaska and fly fished ONCE last month on a river, wading in Utah... so I have a little experience wading. She does not have any.

Any advise would be helpful.

In addition, we may venture out on our own one day and hit a small lake or streams near Durango. I will ask Duranglers when we arrive, but I thought I would ask ya'll first. Any suggestions?

Again, any and all advise would be greatly appreciated. We are new at this whole thing and I really want her to keep enjoying it!

Troy

go local if you go to the juan. that's mighty technical fishing for beginners. you'll want a patient teacher for a guide. wade trip is more practical instruction. float trip will be better for the wife. bear in mind it''ll be hot.

there are lotsa streams east of durango. runoff should be early this year. no telling what you'll be up against there at that time.

Aztec Anglers... And good call on going to the Juan instead of the Animas. Never liked fishing there.

San Juan

If you are going to the San Juan, a float trip with Fishheads of the San Juan is highly recommended. Chris Taylor is a great guy and will take of you and your wife. I have fished with them about a dozen times and will be fishing with them again next month, on my honeymoon no less. Great people.

I highly recommend TJ Massey. He is excellent at instruction, and is a great guy.

Thanks guys for all the recommendations on here and the PM's. I ended up going with Aaron Hyder - booked through Aztec Anglers.
Great time, Aaron was a patient guide. He put my wife and me on fish in three different spots on the San Juan and taught us both a lot.
I am sure there are a bunch of great guides on the San Juan and I have heard favorable reviews of TJ and Fishheads and others but from personal experience I recommend Aaron Hyder. Call Paul!

Thanks Troy, glad you and your bride had a good day with Aaron!! Did you get some pictures? If so, would love to see them. Aaron is top notch for sure! We are lucky to have him.
