Headed to NY...

Going to Albany NY on Monday, training for work. I will be there for 6 weeks having 2 weekends there. Anyone have any information on fishing? I want to fish streams or rivers. I'm in up state so I can travel to different states. Any information would be great.

Thanks,
Scott

I grew up in the Adirondacks and heading up to the Ausable River is well worth your time. Also, if you are interested in small streams, a few of the small streams up there hold Heritage brook trout.

The other thought is from Albany, the Catskills are not that far. Nor is Vermont. You could fish some classic water.

I would 2nd the au sable.
Water is dark and hard to see into while wading. Sketchy.
Beautiful though.

Cool, thanks, I'm looking forward to fishing up there. I've never been up there. What flies do I need? I'm taking my tying kit. I've been looking at the PFR maps, where is the Au Sable? Katskill Creek and 10 mille creek are very close. I don't have isues driving to wherever the best fishing is, best means quality.

Mike, I did fish CA, I need to post the report.

I have fished the beaverkill and willowemoc, but that was when we stayed in Rosco NY. If you do not mind going on there the Beaverkill is awesome! You may want to look up how the current conditons are though, I have not been there in a a while...

The Ausable is in the High Peaks region near Lake Placid. Beautiful stretch of water and truly a New York classic.

Hatch Chart: http://ausablewulff.com/flyhatches.html

I fish all the usual stuff. Morning and evenings are the most productive on top, but if you can find some shady stuff during the day, you can dredge some big fish out of the depths.

Here is some info on the river from the DEC: http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_mari...pfrausable.pdf

The local legend Fran Betters unfortunately passed away a year or two ago, but his patterns are very effective in this area (and all over for that matter.)

Ausable Wulff, Ausable Ugly, Ausable Bombers, just to name a few.

Last time I was up there, I stopped by the Two Fly Shop and was happy with the service. All sorts of good people in the area who can help you out.

Ben

Just got back today from that area. Kind of a fishing bummer. It was hot, like "Africa hot" mid to high 90's and humidity off the charts. Water levels in all the area I saw were very low Did not go to the "best" parts of the Ausauble. Did fish a small Brookie Creek that was low and clear with fish holding in only the deeper pools with very spooky 6-7 brookies. I just did not get a fishing Vibe to explore any where else and ended up doing tourist stuff. But next week I am going to make up for it with week on either the Juan or in Colorado.
