Flyathon

Fly a what?

Wife and I and some friends particpated in the Rocky Mountain Flyathlon this past weekend on a remote creek in the San Luis Valley between Saguache and Gunnison. The theme is simple;

RUN.FISH.BEER.

Although the fun starts on Friday night so it should really be beer.run.fish.beer.

What a great event and it all raises money that go to Trout Unlimited Projects and Western Native Trout Initiatives. The event, now in it's 3rd year, raised over $24,000!

Run (short course roughly 7 miles or long course roughly 12 miles) ...catch a fish and record it ...drink craft beer. Your running time is adjusted by the length of your fish with bonus points awarded for catching a native Rio Grande Cutt. Penalty points added to your time if you show up with crappy beer! Don't worry about being a good runner or a great fishermen ...the competition is very low key!

There are several other events across the US trying to get started ...Arizona would be a prime spot. We would do a road trip.

Here is the link to the website. We will definately be back next year and maybe we will see some Arizona folks!

Pre Race:

Turnaround point on short course:

Beer may be king at the event but there is whiskey at the top too! I really questioned that decision on the switchbacks going down after taking a shot!

Susan's recorded cuttbow ...just an inch short of the big fish award:

The finish ...beer straight ahead!

Post race pic:

Grand Slam ...didn't catch a slam on the water but recorded one post race:

Post race party included great BBQ and beer from Upslope, Elevation, and Three Barrell ...plus many participants brought beers from their favorite breweries for the beer share on Friday night.

Great swag bag too including a special growler from Miir for those who raised $500 or more;

Seriously if you are interested in the event feel free to PM me or get hold of Andrew Todd, the brain child of the event.
