Things I learned about fishing in the cold at Juanuary '08

For most of us, Juanuary was the coldest fly fishing we have ever done. I learned some interesting and amusing things and thought I'd share a couple - please chime in with your favorites as well.

What I learned:

It is nearly never too cold to fish if you have the right clothes, but around 5 degrees, you start to question your sanity.

If it is below 15 degrees, don't dunk your reel in the river.

Things I found interesting:

Water will freeze on your wader legs and your gaiters will freeze solid, with you still in them.

Wet neoprene feet of waders will instantly freeze to asphalt that is about 10 degrees.

Things I've learned

Never think that even with a camper -10 is good weather to camp in. Water lines froze before we even got there.

Diesel trucks and cold weather are a bad mix: Batteries died after too many tries to get her going. (Reason why we never made it to the potluck)

Never take a hot shower for granted. We gave in the last night and stayed at rizuto's just to have one.

Even beer freezes in that weather

Next year have it in november Would be fun to do some cast and blast.

On a side note it was still a good trip. I'm just bummed we couldn't make it to potluck, was really looking forward to that but the cold just killed my truck most of the trip.

Favorite Quotes

Wondered what happened to you 10lb. I figured your trailer froze and you bailed since you did not show up for the potluck. Glad you caught some fish.

Some of my favorite lines from the weekend:

When asked what was the coldest day he could remember guiding on the San Juan:
"There was the last day you guys were last year and, well - today."
-Jude Duran

Because her pipes were frozen:
"Can I use your shower"
-Gretchen (Hideaway owner)

Because their pipes were no longer frozen at the meter in the west units:
"Went back over and the shower was going"
- One of the boys from Texas

"Brrrrr...its colder than &#%@!!!!"
-everyone

IS THIS ONE OF THOSE SITUATIONS WHERE WARM URINE COMES IN HANDY?
