Don't be afraid of the long rod.

In tight overgrown streams in NC i'd rather have my 9' rod then my 6'6'' rod since I wasn't able to cast any way. For me the lomger rod was better for roll-cast, bow and arrow, dapping/dipping, high sticking etc.

Long overhand casts are not the order of the day, so for me the longer rod allowed for better line control techniques when fished with leader only or 3 feet of line outsit the tip guide.
