Don't need a boat if you wana hit up the gill action at canyon. Just goto Boulder cove and fish from shore or off the dock right near the shore. I'm sure with the decent weather some will come out...

There is hands down no better rod type for extremely subtle presentations with smaller dry flies. And yes it is somewhat a preference thing as they have incredibly slow action.
