Weedy Lakes

My wife has a suggestion. If I go to Carnero when it's very weedy, she said to take my week wacker.

Orvis makes a snorkel that will fit most weed wackers....

Levisdad,

Now that's funny especially the mental image.

Hmmm, it never takes me a week to wackit... maybe I’m doing it wrong?

I made a carry strap for my float tube and launch closer to the dam to avoid the tedious, fin snagging 'channel' at the ' boat launch'. A little walking saves me a lot of time llcoolj

I embrace the weeds, it's what keeps it a good trout fishery and one of my favorite spots.

windknot - how do you fish the weedbeds - just find a channel between them? Or use dries?

I am no expert, but I would think a floating line with a dry fly and a dropper on very short piece of tippet would be a good choice for weedy areas. Maybe a small nymph to dangle below to dry fly?

I fish the edges of the weeds like any other cover, sometimes perpendicular, sometimes parallel. When I fish close like that I use a 4x tippet if I'm dragging meat to horse the fish back before they get in the weeds.

When I do a dry/emerger or chironomid/pupa rig I go 5x and get them on the reel, up and away from the weeds as speedy as i can. Same with tossing damsel"s, terrestrial or other dry's into the holes.

The fish are there it's really a matter of getting them to the net after they take.

So, WK, do you just cast over the weeds to a clear spot, then just let the fly sit till they hit it? I tried to fish a situation like that and any retrieve would snag the weeds.

Wind Knot,

I was told by a seasoned Carnero angler to use a pontoon boat. Oars are better for moving through the veggies than flippers. How far is the walk to your launch area?
