Black River

Is the main stem of the Black River fishable? Was it completely wiped out by the Wallow Fire?

It has recovered from the Wallow fire. There are streams in AZ that may never recover from other fires.

From my experience, it is still recovering from the fire and furthermore the Rattlesnake Fire has impacted some areas downstream. The river has run very off color, think chocolate milk for weeks.

I don't know exactly what impact this has had on the fish but its not helping the river. It's not able to clear back up as nearly as fast these days.

It will be years before it can truly recover.

The Black River is in good shape in terms of recovering from the Wallow Fire. While there certainly was a fish kill after the Fire, it has actually probably helped the trout in the long run by knocking the smallmouth back a fair amount downstream. The brown trout, hybrid rainbow/apaches, and chub all have done very on the recovery end.

Joe is definitely right that fires can impact streams in AZ for extremely long periods of time. However, some of the trout populations in the streams in White Mountains are actually better post Wallow Fire. Some creeks have seen an increase in base flows when compared to pre-Wallow.

However, keep in mind we have had two successive poor winters. Couple that with hot and dry summers and below average monsoon seasons and you get some stressed out fish and poor fishing days. Here's to hoping we have a good winter this year.

My favorite place in Arizona to fish is the main stem black! Ill go down there and have 20-30 fish days with half of the fish over 12 inches and some browns topping 18!
