Official Juanuary 09 Picture Thread

All right fella's post them if you go them...

Another epic Juanuary event in the books. Even if the fishing was not as good as in years past, the food, fun and comradery more then made up for it. Got to see a lot of familiar faces and meet some new friends. The weather was FANTASTIC! Now whether or not that was a good thing is still TBD... ;)

Thursday we had the upper flats all to ourselves.
http://www.outdoordestination.com/pi.../09/River1.JPG

Managed two nice fish over ~18"
http://www.outdoordestination.com/pi...n/09/Josh1.JPG

This female was in full color and her belly was all scarred up.
http://www.outdoordestination.com/pi...n/09/Josh2.JPG

T-Hole on Friday afternoon. It's empty becasue evereyone had moved up to a deep hole in the braids. I managed 3 dinks at the top of the hole. Fished for about 2 hours and never really saw any fish of any size come to hand.
http://www.outdoordestination.com/pi...n/09/Thole.JPG

We fished until dark Friday waiting for the top water bite turn on (never happened) but we were rewarded with a beautiful San Juan sunset.
http://www.outdoordestination.com/pi.../09/Sunset.JPG

Saturday was a BAD day! At least for me. Those in the boats and toons seemed to have some luck though. No fish on Saturday, so here is a picture of a worm...
http://www.outdoordestination.com/pi...an/09/Worm.JPG

Sunday we decided to fish lower river. Had a very slow morning but on the walk back I pulled this little guy out of a deep riffle.
http://www.outdoordestination.com/pi...n/09/Josh3.JPG

We left the river about Noon Sunday and made the long drive back to Phx.

I got a sneak peak of a few hogs caught this weekend, and after seeing the Saturday night slide show, we should have no shortage of pictures for this thread.

A quick thanks to Greg, Dana and Seldom for putting this together and offering up the Stone House for the festivities and to everyone else in the crew who made this another great event.

Now lets see those pictures!

Convergence

Nice work, Josh!

It was a lot of fun to meet some new faces and see some familiar ones.

Things finally converged for me on the third day. I went out with YO_G to explore the area around Baetis Bend for the day, but ended up wandering up a side channel by myself for the better part of it. I soon came across a small winding riffle that emptied over a shelf into a long trough with a nice foam seam that extended for a few dozen yards adjacent to the main current.

I fished the riffle first, as it was shallow and fully exposed by the sunny sky.

http://azflyfishing.net/azffgallery/...s/juan09_0.jpg

I immediately picked up some small browns, and had one take by a nice fish that quickly dumped over into the deep run and threw the hook.

http://azflyfishing.net/azffgallery/...s/juan09_1.jpg

I fished the shelf next and had best luck there. At one point I was hooking up every 4th or 5th drift as the fly passed from the end of the riffle and over the shelf. This lasted for nearly 30 minutes. I must have touched every fish that was holding in that part of the water.

Landed one nice brown.

http://azflyfishing.net/azffgallery/...s/juan09_2.jpg

Landed several nice bows.

http://azflyfishing.net/azffgallery/...s/juan09_3.jpg

The biggest fish were deep in the run. It is a challenge to land large hard-fighting bows on a size 24 hook by yourself and without a net.

http://azflyfishing.net/azffgallery/...s/juan09_4.jpg

The potluck was a blast. Thanks to everyone who took the time and expense to feed this pathetic excuse of a trout bum.

By the way, who is Ian?

Josho 01-20-2009 09:49 AM

Good to see you got your Juanuary redemption ASU. I knew you would....

Josh

Iron_Mike 01-20-2009 10:20 AM

Some nice looking Troooots.

Dana Parmelee 01-20-2009 12:56 PM

I had a great time although the fishing was tough.
Great people, great food and fantastic weather.

Fell on my arse hard walking on ice on Friday... fell down and got water in my waders Sunday. Got skunked both Sat and Sun.

The trout gods blessed me on Friday though. My biggest trout to date... fishunter was my wing man and we taped it at 25"
http://www.azflyandtie.com/photopost...in_net_75_.JPG

Thanks to everyone who made the trip. It was nice to meet new people and see old friends.

Hopefully, one of my new friends... will be there next year

*hijack alert*

asu - care to fish for some troots on the west side? gimme a call.

Jojackc 01-20-2009 02:54 PM

My buddy Greg and I showed up Sat morning at 2am. So we got a late start on Sat for fishing because after getting some sleep and needing to do some shopping in the morning. We hit the river at about 1pm. I got skunked and my buddy Greg managed to land one at north of 22". Sunday I finaly set the hook into my first Juan fish late in the evening. Here is a close up that really shows the colors on this thing.

http://www.azflyandtie.com/photopost...m/CIMG0982.JPG

We also fished on Monday and I managed to hook up with one more.

http://www.azflyandtie.com/photopost...m/CIMG0997.JPG

It was a great trip. In fact I pre-booked it for next year already.

I want to say thanks to all who made it a great trip and weekend of fishing, eating and a gathering for me. Thanks to all who offered up advice on how to fish the Juan. Although I was blanked on Sat and only caught 2 on Sun, it was good advice that enabled me nab 2 and several other escapees that day. I am am glad Josh was able to re-catch the one he released (with his net 10 yards down from where he released it! is that an illegal re-catch?:ROFL: ) as he thought I had gotten 2 pictures with his camera but after he checked his camera no pictures. So after he re-caught it I had to re-take them making sure I heard the camer beep. :)

I did manage to get a picture of one of the ones I caught although too much light.

I only got to fish Saturday, and as you may have heard it wasn't super easy fishing for those of us wading upstream, but I did manage a couple fish, one of which was pretty good.

http://www.azflyandtie.com/photopost...n_09_small.jpg

Thanks to everyone who helped out with the pot luck. That was freaking awesome. Good to see you guys too. Hopefully I'll be able to get down to fish with y'all more often.

NittanyLion 01-22-2009 10:58 AM

This was my best fish of the trip. Mr. Smith posted it in one of the other threads, but I wanted to keep this one going.

I reckon I should post some pics. Tonight perhaps...

Good Company

Well, I think that ASU has great photos really highlight some very good fish. Great photos, great fish! And several others are all too modest about what great fish they caught. I am proud to have one or two photos to contribute...

On Saturday, Mike & Mike, guided by Chip, drift the Juan and catch our share...Mike must have gotten two or three before Mike got his first, a small rainbow, but then he (Mike) landed a nice on, too. From there it was back and forth. Mike, then Mike. Then Mike again. Then Mike, Mike, and Mike...and Mike again!

Mike strikes first at the Texas Hole...

And then again!
http://www.azflyandtie.com/photopost...6-2009_012.jpg

This guy is pounding them!
http://www.azflyandtie.com/photopost...6-2009_017.jpg

Mike's very first San Juan rainbow!
http://www.azflyandtie.com/photopost...6-2009_015.jpg

it's all downhill from here.

http://www.azflyandtie.com/photopost...6-2009_023.jpg

http://www.azflyandtie.com/photopost...6-2009_026.jpg

And I can't speak for Mike, but although I know mine aren't the biggest or the best, they are my first, so I just wanted to show them to everybody! Great trip, great company, and thank you all for including me.

Mike & Mike Roooooock the Juan!!!

stoneflynut 01-23-2009 12:00 PM

Mike...great photos! Thanks for sharing. I see you guys got some browns. Three of us from Northern Arizona Flycasters were there the weekend before you and two of us also caught browns. You guys had the warmer weather.

SJDrifli 01-23-2009 12:37 PM

So Mike, who did you fish with? and did Mike catch any fish?;) Those are some nice bows and very pretty browns. Lots of browns now in the lower river! Don't have to stock them badboys! Looks like a great trip and Chip is awesome! Thanks M&M

Okay, Shirley, if that's how want it, but "Iron Shirley" just ain't the same. ;)

Oh, and here is a picture of the Hideaway sign and some of my buds at the Rio Courtyard. They were so 'cool' I booked it for next year. Hoping ASU will bunk there, too.

Right on! We should get fanatic in on it, too. We would then have some good competition for a back-of-the-toilet-bowl splash contest.

What you really need is someone that can kick Dana and Kevin off the throne, and I am not talking about the porcelain one. I mean they were a real washer machine!

Dude,

Okay I have been nice (you have great wine and cigars and take bitchin' photos) but I have to protest this one! No mas, no mas!

This is a photo thread, not The View!!!!

Washing machine...that's a good one.

NOW, BACK TO THE PICTURES...

OK, fanatic will have to stay somewhere else...he IS another Mike, after all, and I think that maybe Mikes should be limited to one per room, lest things get entirely out of hand.

Ok I'm going next year, and bringing my dad ..... Mike....

I know eight fly fishers named Mike,
it's fly fishing and photos they like.
They catch fish and snap pictures,
add some prose to the mixtures.
And post the biggest and best of their strikes.

So let's see them, Mike!

Tim,

It's always President's Day weekend...or at least it's been that way the last couple of years

biscut head 09-28-2009 07:20 AM

Yea, nothing has changed with the date. Was getting a little excited early I guess, we got cool fall nights up here and we get our first dusting in the high country this week so my mind is on cold weather fishing. Guess we'll wait til December for the official drawn out thread leading up to it. Don't want to hi-jack this thread and ruin it, so I will shut up until then!
