Sunfish Stocking
I need some clarification.

I have been told by a number of people, including one fisheries biologist, sunfish are an invasive species. Two questions.

1. Is it true sun fish are an invasive species?

2. Why does AZ Game & Fish stock sun fish?

Two of the AZGFD fisheries managers (Mike Lopez and Don Mitchell) that use to contribute to this site have retired. Bryan, who was working for Mike L., moved to Montana 6 months prior to Mike L's retirement. Bryan was a major contributor for here for 1-2 years. So to have your questions answered properly may require research outside of this website.

Joe, I still check in from time to time. Hope all is well.

“Sunfish” is a general name that is used to refer to a number of panfish species.

Green Sunfish are considered invasive in AZ because they are highly predatory and can severely impact native fish populations.

Bluegill are stocked in some waters to provide recreational opportunities as they are not the threat that greens are.

Redear Sunfish are in the state. They were not in my region, so I’m unsure what the management plans were with them.
