Ashurst Lake

Fishing has been good for hold-over brown and rainbow trout and water quality at Ashurst is the best I've seen in 30 years. Maybe it's the fencing or all the summer and fall rains, but whatever, it is not brown!

We fished it Wednesday and landed two nice rainbows between 2-3 pounds and some smaller browns; went back Sunday and caught 2 fat and sassy browns about 2 and 3 pounds each. There were lots of anglers fishing from shore but we were using a float tube and a pontoon trailing intermediate sink tip lines with streamers and a Prince nymph. It just might be that netting all those pike out a few years back has allowed many of the stockers to survive through multiple seasons.

The weather has been fantastic here in northern Arizona and the winds have been quiet. Btw, we were fishing on the far side of the lake, across from the main boat ramp, along the volcanic cliffs in front of the campground.

These are beautiful and healthy fish but they did begin their lives in a hatchery so don't be surprised if they are missing a few fins.
