Wondering if I put a 6wt sink on my 5wt if it would cast better than using 5wt line. I hear going with a heavier line can help cast but I didn't know if that applied to all lines.

I overlined my rods when I was just starting out and it did help.

Cool thanks for the help man. Gonna pick up some full sink line for going out to saguaro with my tube that is scheduled to arrive on friday :D

What sink rate is the one you normally use? I know you mentioned one type that is pretty versatile.

I would not suggest overlining with a sinking line. If you've not cast a sinking line before, I'd suggest RIO's 150 grain sinking tip line. Or, depending on how deep you're trying to go, the clear intermediate in a 5 weight would be good.

I've already got a 10 foot sink tip so far and I've figured out how it casts pretty well.

Rush, I use the clear intermediate sinking line with my 5wt and it's ideal, but wouldn't go heavier than that on a 5wt.

What day are you heading up to Saguaro to break in the new tube? I can't make it Saturday, but was planning on hitting Butcher Jones on Sunday.

The only lines I carry are a floating, intermediate sink and a type III uniform sink SA line.

I was planning to hit it up on Saturday but I might go Sunday or heck maybe both days.

Well got some SA sinking and it's funny I walked out and was immedietely casting about 10' from the backing. Granted I have no fly on but I was pleasantly surprised. And that line was tugging hard on my hand to shoot out more :D

This is exactly what I carry when I'm going to stillwater too.

Then let it shoot out more, baby! You gotta cast the whole line once just to have done it!

It is good line :) I have a pretty wrecked shoulder so I only use a full sink if I have to. Type III, which for most companies means right around a 4-6 inch per second drop, is usually just about right. Once you really get that full sink into the water the roll cast to the surface before you can cast is what gets my rotator cuff all ticked off at me ha ha

As far as overlining I am not a real big fan of it, it does load a rod harder, but in my opinion changes how that rod bends, which companies put a lot of money into designing so it is never quite right. Timing is the key to loading a rod, and unless you have some wind at your back each line is grain weighted to bend and load it's designated weight rod. Unless is is a Very stiff rod, I prefer a medium flex myself, but the Rio Grand and SA GPX and both 1/2 weights heavier to better load fast action rods without over flexing so much.

I would have but it was dark and I think I was running out of snag free back casting room.
