Hey everybody, just trying to get some basic numbers on how many to expect for the tying contest on March 6th. There will be three classes, beginners, intermediates, and advanced. No sandbaggers! ha ha and my favorite of all, the Blindfolded woollybugger contest! It should be good

You might have to add more info here about what fly tying contests? plus this may need to be moved to the Industrial Zone.

This is in reference to fly tying contests that will be held at Bass Pro Shops on March 6th.

Tentative schedule as follows:
11-12 beginning
12-1 intermediate
1-2 advanced
Blindfolded woollybugger contest start at 2pm, timed! - only 20 min.

Also, azflyandtie.com will have a table at the store during the event to promote the website. We will be doing some fly tying demonstrations.

I am hosting Bass Pro's first tying contest, We have been around for three years now and I thought it was about time!

Greg and the guys will have a table and CRF might as well, the weekend before and after will have the Desert and Arizona fly clubs. As the 6th is the tying contest date I am excited to have AZflyandtie there!

There will be gift cards for the winners plus bragging rights of course... I am providing all the materials, tables, and chairs. If you have a light please bring it, lighting is ok but not great. I will have extension cords set up with the tables for you to use. We will also have water and I will most likely bake cookies or some other goodies ;)

I am hoping for a good turnout so I can justify better events and funding for donations to groups, participation in these events is a big decider when clubs come to ask for items for raffles, plus tying contests are just fun in general, especially the blindfolded woollybugger, I am excited for that! It was Big Hands Idea :)

Let me know if anyone has any other questions!

How is it going to work... is someone going to ask for a fly type at that moment and then everyone will try to tie up one at that time? This sounds like fun, so even though I am only a low end of the pack in terms of my abilities to identify and tie flies, I might join in this.

I am going to suppy all of the materials and each bracket will have a different fly they will have to tie. For example the advanced group might have to tie a royal coachman.. while the beginning might tie an elk hair caddis. In case a person does not know what that fly is they will get to see an example, but it comes with a point deduction. Mostly it will be fun and goofy :) Flys will be judged by a point system, for example 5 points for a well balanced fly, minus a point for loose dubbing... ect.

I am most excited for the blindfolded woollybugger contest, you get a partner, but if you talk to them its an automatic minute added to your time, you only get 20 min to finish the fly, best completed fly wins! oh... and everyone watching can tease and hollar as much as they want :D

Winners will get braggin rights, a gift card, and I am thinking about making trophys....

This sounds pretty dang fun. Especially the blindfolded wooly bugger. We do kind of the same thing up here during our Wasatch Fly Tying Expo. Last year it was a Chernobyl Ant. Had Charlie Craven playing too. He's one of my flytying heroes. ;)

Wish I could play too :(

I am hoping people enjoy it, and that I can make it better each year! This will be our first tying contest, but last year people absolutely loved getting to see all the tyers in action and I had Gary Borger come down and do some tying, that was pretty neat :) Hopefully if all goes well I can convince the white shirts upstairs that our fly shop is alive and kicking and deserves some support! ha ha I am most likely gonna film the blindfolded contest and put together a slide show for our website  it should be good!

I tried to practice tying a wooly-bugger with my eyes closed other-day and this is no easy task. Even with the hook pre-viced, tail feather, chenille and thread in bobbin all layed out in front of you and clamped so I could find it. I tried several times to get it all connected together to resemble a fly but not easy at all.

It is not easy at all! but doable ;) I am sure you have heard from more than one experienced tier that they could tie that fly blindfolded, and its much more difficult than many would think! They often come out looking.... Extra woolly :grillin: but it's mostly for fun, plus you can opt to have a partner, who can help hand you things, they can't cut for you, but it saves looking for the material. Keep in mind you can't speak to them though, unless you decide that the time cut is worth the sentence you need to say! All in all it should be a bunch of tiers taking the time to laugh goodheartedly at eachother while promoting tying and earning bragging rights :)

I'm going to try to make it. Don't want to commit with it being so far out.
