I have a summer place in Show Low but have never fished on the Reservation. Could you guys explain what it would take to be able to fish on the Reservation.

The first (and perhaps only) 3 items that pop into my head are:

1. A reservation fishing permit.
2. Appropriate fishing tackle and rod.
3. Time availability.

4. A desire to see some of the most beautiful landscape this Earth has to offer.

It is that easy...Tempe Marine sells permits in Phoenix. Here is the WMAT website it has all the info you need.

Beware to all....
If you get your permits at Tempe Marine, make SURE they get the dates correct for all of the permits required; fishing, camping, boating.
They have missed a date on my permits in the past and once your on the Res there isn't anything you can do about it and the Res officials will cut you NO slack.
For that matter, make sure the dates are correct wherever you end up getting your permits. I've been getting them in Carrizo lately but you need to get up there before the gas station closes, I think it's 9:00 pm. There is a number to the store on the Apache website, it's a Chevron.

If you are going to be in Show Low...its easy enough to just stop by Hon Dah on your way towards the lakes, just off the 260. You cant miss it..they will have permits as well.

You may want to move those dates on the cabin as close to springtime as possible considering how dry everything is this year and the possibility of the majority of the forests being closed, access could be a problem. just a thought..

Also dedicate about 30 minutes waiting at Tempe Marine for them to figure out how to print them...Dana is dead on about the dates, made them reprint my licenses 3 times a couple of weeks ago because of wrong dates. Unfortunately it is the only place in town to get them, as I am typically leaving at 3 A.M. and prefer the way through Whiteriver as opposed to Show Low/Pinetop.

Right Kevin,
That is the only reason I don't care to get them in Hon Dah, I usually hit the dirt in Whiteriver also.
Although... that fly shop in Hon Dah has become quite the outfit, they have everything.

That fly shop is nice Dana, have a good and safe trip back to CT...Let's go somewhere and chase some fish when you get back.

Yea, ask Seldom about the time I came to visit him on the Reservation down in Iron Mountain. Beautiful country.

Dana,

My plan of Becker next weekend is coming apart, the wife is trying to talk me into taking my 9 year old neice out fishing and camping. We will see, if not then soon. I see snow in the forecast for Springville, Pinetop and Flag next Friday, keep your fingers crossed!!!!

First of all get out of the city. Just get a Tribal Permit and get map in REG. Book from Hon-dah Outdoor/Ski shop for free, and ask for extesion #7570 for the latest on fishing. You can go wrong.

if you tube, you will need PFD. Also keep permit close to you, the rangers get out and about at the WMAT. I have a nice little spot on the upper salt that takes 2 hours to get to on 8 miles of road and they have checked my permit 3 of the 4 times i've been there. No firearms from what i remember, and have fun.
