Smallies Rule! June 22nd @ Willow Springs Lake. Beautiful lake loaded with bronzebacks & trout. Perfect for all members to participate. Shorefishing, tubes, toons, canoes, kayaks, and boats with a 10 hp limit are all welcome! Awesome scenery, temps, with shade, restrooms, tables and grills. The official tournament & BBQ will take place on Sunday. Many of you might want to camp out Saturday night and we will start a roster for them as well.
Escape the heat and join in on the fun! All ideas to make this a great event are welcome.....

I'm in!!!
I will be going up Saturday and camping. There is a good dispersed campground just at the top of the rim behind the look out. Will work well for group camping. It's only 5 minutes to Willow Springs. If you want to fish Woods Canyon on Saturday it's only a 10 minute drive.

I'm tossing a few ideas around and would like suggestions. I want to have a "fun", no pressure tournament where all have a shot and no one group like boaters have a distinct advantage. We will have a trophy/prize/cash for "Biggest Smallmouth".
Also, I want to include trout so we will have a trophy/prize/cash for "Biggest Rainbow" as well. I will solicit all the local shops for donations. The more donations we receive will determine how many places we can include in the winners circle! I will be clear with potential sponsors who we are and emphasize our growing market strength. Part of the pitch will be a promise to publish (post) their individual contributions to a membership some 500 strong, their target market!
Here is what I need. Participation. AZFATBC members, please get behind this and sign up for June 22nd. I am doing the best I can to get AZFATBC up and running and need help.
Our events have been great and attendance is growing. I thank you all. Lets keep the momentum going!

While OTF is working on the fishing aspect I will get together camping info. Where, when, maps, etc.
If anyone has ideas to share please let me know. I know a good spot just on top of the Rim about 5 minutes away from Willow Springs. It's a dispersed area but has had a campground host the past 2 years. When I spoke with him last fall he said they would also be there this summer.

I was just looking around and found that this camp site is packed if we want places we will have to reserve sites soon or we might not get sites we might not any way - I am probably in on this one big factor is if you have to be a member of the bass club to come

John, with JT on the oars and me with and me with my force fins, you don't stand a chance!!! Hope all is well amigo! I am itching to go chase roosters again. I need redemption!!!
On The Fly!
06-04-2008, 05:30 PM
Flats, you don't need redemption. You have been validated many times over with the pics of your conquests (fish)!
Hope you can make it to Willow Springs. Big boats allowed if you use your TM. If you insist on using a tube/tune, your girlfriend is welcome on my boat! Opt for the toon, please!!!!
Don :)
Zach...are you gonna be with JT? I hope to get my boat up and ready by then. I haven't even ahd it out of the box yet. Too much playtime. I have never figured out the smallies in that lake. Hope to this time. Should be fun, looking forward to fishing with you again. Don's right. You need no redemption when playing with roosters. You just need to keep doing it. Some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug.

Dub - lookout for team Scadden. We'll have a 27 lb thrust trolling motor, oars and a jet pack.

Just finished welding a JATO Unit to the frame of my FishCat Cougar. If the fishing at Willow Springs sucks, I'll just shoot over to Woods Canyon...that would be...drum-roll...a blast!
Is that jet pack or 12 pack???

Don't think I can make it on this trip. I hope there is a good AZFATBC showing though. Past events have proven to be a great time and if flychef is going, you'll all be in for a treat.
Take LOTS of pictures and hammer the bronzebacks
Edit: I need to see what I can do. Maybe I can make it up. If flychef doesnt go, then I'll HAVE to go to make sure you guys have some killer steaks when you get off the water.
Go AZFAT baby!!!

Dana, Bring the corn man, that was outstanding! Fly Chef has got to experience Willow Springs. He may have a work conflict but he has assured me the steaks will be available. Hope I can get some of his rub. It is fantastic. We need to include a garlic bread dripping in butter to the menu...
AZFAT & AFATBC, Spend a day in the cool of the pines, catch some fish, have a great lunch and meet new friends.....
Trout are included as a prize fish!

It is probably a slurring of words after all the brewski's    and instead of saying "Is the meat tender", it comes out, "vhat is their Gender".:ROFL::ROFL: But we can it on the booze. Well, The wife is still not comfortable about going to higher elevation areas, so I most likely not going up to the Rim to camp, but it will be just a day outing for me if I can make it. Is the afternoon BBQ going to be over in the camp grounds of who ever camps, or do you think someone might be able to nab one of the Ramada areas there by the lake/ boat-ramp? Just an idea as I like being near the water!

Looking forward to catching something at Willow Springs Lake. Ordered online from Walmart a new Vivatar that is waterproof and hope to capture some photos.

It is fairly cheap ($60) but is rated at 5 M-Pixals which is better than my regular digital camera. Best part is it comes with a case to make it wasterproof up to 15ft. Anyway, will see how it works.

I'm in.
I've never caught a smallmouth before.

Here is a few more flys I tied and will try on the small-mouth except the two larger ones on the right, which might seek a large-mouth as they are size 1. The othes are a size 10.

I was at willow today, and did fairly well. There are smallies on beds right now, and by next weekend you will find more largmouths up on beds aswell. Almost everyone shore fishing had a stringer full of trout. water is 6-10 foot vis depending on where you are at. You guys are in for a great trip.

Well, bummer, I am officially out of this one. We moved last week and I promised the wife that I would not go fishing until we were really settled in. We would have been done by yesterday except that I tweaked my back and spent the past 3 days horizontal and doped up. Feeling better today but I'm still not doing any heavy lifting for a few more days. Really bummed out about missing this trip, looks like a beautiful lake. Next time for sure.

I see the weather for sunday in Heber (closest weather location to WS lake i could find) is predicting a slight chance for thunderstorms but really no prediction of rain, which means windy. Lets hope not. Last few times I been to this lake it was real windy and even bait casting would be difficult.

Here is a link to Forest Lakes weather, just down the road.
High around 89, winds SSW at 16 mph.

Weather is in transition now. There is high probability for afternoon rain every day in the whites and along the rim until September. The steady winds will go away too....maybe.
