West Fork Black River
May 25, 2019 - 4:50 PM - by Bucksnort
Bear with me anglers, I'm learning. The best way to learn about fly fishing is to read and ask questions.

While driving on Road 25, about one mile from the intersection of 24 and 25, I spotted the west fork while driving over a bridge. A quick glance told me this section of the fork is right up my alley - good looking pocket water. I pulled to the side of the road, donned my gear and headed back to the bridge only to find the entire area fenced off above and below the bridge. ... [Read More]

Apache Trout
May 25, 2019 - 4:33 PM - by Bucksnort

Last year, I posted a notice about catching my first Apache trout in the Black River at Wildcat Crossing. You chimed in to tell me there are no pure Apaches in the Black River. I remember replying by saying this trout did look anything like any rainbow I have caught.

After catching the three Apaches at Aker Lake, I can now say you are one hundred percent correct (I never doubted you) about the hybrid. These Apaches did not look anything like the... [Read More]

Woods Canyon Lake
May 22, 2019 - 11:33 AM - by M Lopez
The boat ramp at Woods Canyon Lake has been closed for construction of the parking area and roads down by the ramp. Because of the regular rain/snow storms we've been having all through the month of May, they've not been able to finish that construction. Thus, the boat ramp is NOT going to be open through the Memorial weekend. The contractors are hoping the weather next week is clear enough to finish it then and the new anticipated opening date for the boat ramp at Woods is May 31 at the... [Read More]

The Committee Punch Bowl
May 15, 2019 - 4:45 PM - by Bucksnort
Many years ago, an article appeared in an issue of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife magazine about how cutthroat trout may have crossed the Continental Divide. One theory is ice dams that would build up in creeks on either side of the Divide enabling trout to swim over the Divide.

I don't know more about this but I do know there is a likely place in Canada called, "The Committee Punch Bowl" where the must have crossed.

On the Outdoor Channel, a... [Read More]

Mosquitos and Trout
May 21, 2019 - 8:39 PM - by Bucksnort
One of these day, when I can get my good friend and fishing pal in Colorado to send an article about mosquitos sucking blood from the heads of live trout, I will post it. He gave it to me years ago but I can't find it. The article was written by someone who knows what is what with trout. It was written in the 1920s or 30s.

I know, someone will say mosquitos only suck blood from warm blooded critters.

Here is what I have to say about mosquitos.
